Enabling that start-up spirit: Knorr-Bremse joins with TechFounders to drive forward the ideas of young entrepreneurs

Knorr-Bremse is taking part in the TechFounders accelerator program at UnternehmerTUM, the Center for Innovation and Business Creation at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), which supports fledgling start-ups. Together with other leading German technology corporations, Knorr-Bremse utilizes this start-up promotion program to develop new business ideas and technologies.

Rheinbahn Düsseldorf: optimized processes thanks to iCOM

A pilot project being launched by Knorr-Bremse and Düsseldorfer Rheinbahn using the digital platform iCOM promises better maintenance efficiency, shorter downtimes and reduced costs. iCOM functions as a central data hub, monitoring the status of rail vehicles and helping operators to introduce proactive and more cost-effective predictive maintenance systems.

Bielefeld utilities subsidiary moBiel has ordered 24 Vamos GTZ8-B high-floor light rail vehicles from the consortium of Kiepe Electric and Leipzig-based vehicle manufacturer Heiterblick.

When the paths of trains and road vehicles converge at level crossings, the potential hazards are substantial. Reducing this level of risk has long been a prime concern of Dr. techn. Josef Zelisko GmbH, a company founded in Mödling, Austria in 1918. Part of the Knorr-Bremse Group since 1988, Zelisko has been manufacturing signalling systems for railways for the past 60 years and more.

Knorr-Bremse posts record sales of EUR 6.24 bn in fiscal 2017

  • Sales up 13.7% at EUR 6.24 bn (2016: EUR 5.49 bn)

  • FX-adjusted, both divisions – Rail Vehicle Systems and Commercial Vehicle Systems – deliver record revenues

  • Revenues Rail Vehicle Systems division: EUR 3.33 bn
    (2016: EUR 2.99 bn)

  • Revenues Commercial Vehicle Systems division: EUR 2.93 bn (2016: EUR 2.52 bn)
  • Incoming orders outpace sales, up 16.4% at EUR 6.66 bn (2016: EUR 5.72 bn)

  • EBITDA for 2017 totaled EUR 1.06 bn (2016: EUR 1.01 bn), despite extraordinary expenses

Knorr-Bremse Nordic Rail Services is to sell its Swedtrac business in Sweden to Stadler

Knorr-Bremse Nordic Rail Services AB, a subsidiary of Knorr-Bremse, is to sell its Swedtrac service business to Stadler Service Sweden AB, a subsidiary of Stadler. The two companies have signed an agreement to this effect. The transaction is ex-pected to close at the end of Q1 2018.

Knorr-Bremse stops transfer of production at Hasse & Wrede

In line with a decision by the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse and the Management Board of Hasse & Wrede, the transfer of production of torsional vibration dampers for commercial vehicles and stationary engines to Liberec in the Czech Republic will not go ahead. Consequently, Hasse & Wrede’s Berlin-Marzahn plant with its rich industrial heritage will be retained. An initiative by the Hasse & Wrede Works Council via-à-vis the Executive Board of the family firm which is not governed by collective bargaining made it possible to provide this job security.

China’s commercial vehicle market discovers automated manual transmissions

Most Chinese commercial vehicles still have manual transmission, but demand for automated manual transmissions is rising and the potential is huge. Having acquired the on-highway commercial vehicle transmission components business of Bosch in Japan to complement its existing product portfolio, Knorr-Bremse is ideally positioned to meet this demand in Asia.
